Every month, Xbox One gamers can download and play a selection of free games as part of an Xbox Live Gold subscription.

Xbox Live Gold is more than just free games though. It also gives Xbox One X, Xbox One S or even original Xbox One owners the chance to play their games online and discounts on many digital games on the Xbox Store.

Membership in the UK usually costs £17.99 for three-months or £49.99 for a whole year's membership when paid up front. Alternatively, you can choose to pay monthly for £6.99 a month.

In our opinion though, the best way to subscribe is through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. For just £10.99 per month, you get Xbox Live Gold membership, Xbox Game Pass with access to over 200 games to download and play, plus Xbox Game Pass for PC with more than 100 Windows 10 titles.

Here is the free Xbox Games with Gold list for January 2019:

Styx: Shards of Darkness

  • Available 1 to 31 January 2020

Cyanide's stealth game may have gone under the radar for most, but the sequel to Master of Shadows is a decent challenge with high production values and a great lead character in the goblin thief, Styx.

Batman: The Telltale Series

  • Available 16 January 2020 to 15 February 2020

Telltale may not be around any longer, but it made some great episodic interactive adventures and is sorely missed. Batman: The Telltale Series is one of its best, and you can find out why for yourself with the entire series collected as part of Xbox Games with Gold this month.

Tekken 6

  • Available 1 to 15 January 2020

Tekken 6 might show its age at times (being 12 years old) but it's still a great beat-em-up, with a fine line-up of fighters and variety of gameplay modes. It also added the Rage system to even up bouts, and new areas that can be broken into through walls, etc.

Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy

  • Available 16 to 31 January 2020

With The Rise of Skywalker in cinemas, what better time to revisit the trilogy that started the whole Star Wars ball rolling than now. In Lego form. There have been plenty of Lego games in the last decade or so, but few match the comedic timing and puzzle action as this one.

Tekken 6 and Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy are Xbox 360 games that have been resurrected through backward compatibility.

Of last month's free games, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate HD and Insane Robots will be available until 31 December, while Jurassic World Evolution, will still be available for download until 15 January 2020.

The latter two games are also available for Xbox 360 owners who have Xbox Live Gold membership.
